| Not All Lipstick Lesbians
are Lesbians! Lipstick lesbians - or femmes, as they are traditionally known - are getting a really tough deal at the moment. Not only do many straight people fail to recognize their identity as true lesbians, but some butch lesbians will not accept them as part of the crowd, either. It's hardly surprising, though, as in recent years an increasing number of fake lesbians have been on the scene, many of them adopting a feminine guise, making it difficult to know which one is real, and which one is fake! But why are there so many women around that are called lipstick lesbians when they're not really lesbians at all? We look closely at three main types of lipstick lesbians that are around nowadays and distinctly categorize them so you can spot the real from the fake from a mile off! A Traditional Lipstick Lesbian The traditional portrayal of a lipstick lesbian (or femme as they were known) was born back in the 1950's and 1960's. Whilst lesbianism wasn't really socially accepted, society dictated that a lesbian woman either had to be a butch, manly lesbian who wore men's clothes, or a feminine lesbian who wore skirts, coiffed hair and make up. In fact, many lesbian bars would not let you enter if you weren't dressed as either a butch or a femme. It was also believed that a femme should only be attracted to a butch lesbian, almost as if they were seeking a male role model in a female! Many such femmes still exist today. A Modern Lipstick Lesbian Whilst lesbian couples openly admit that there is a butch and a femme personality in many relationships, we don't feel the need to seek an opposite in a partner in terms of the way we dress, or behave, as much anymore. Thus, lesbian relationships have evolved and a modern lipstick lesbian will often have a feminine partner. You only have to frequent a local lesbian club to see that naturally feminine women are dating other feminine women, and vice versa. With lesbians feeling slightly more liberated than a few decades ago (although we still have a long way to go to feel totally socially accepted) we are confident enough to rid the slightly tainted view that one female in the relationship should look like, or act like, more of a man. It's more of a natural selection process in finding a partner nowadays, rather than looking for your opposite. A Fake Lipstick Lesbian
It sounds unbelievable but there is an increasing number
of new lipstick lesbians around, and these can be grouped into what we like
to call fake lipstick lesbians. There are a couple of different types. |
